Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii) continued to oppose efforts to exclude Native Hawaiians from the reauthorization of the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA), which provides affordable housing to the Native Hawaiian and other Native communities.

On February 9, 2018, the Hawai`i State Supreme Court ruled (4-1 majority) that the Hawai`i State Legislature is only required to fund the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands the amount that the delegates of the 1978 Hawaii State Constitutional Convention estimated it takes in administration and operating expenses, adjusted for inflation.
