PUKALANI, MAUI — Christmas came early for 28 families who were offered homesteads on Maui this morning by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.

Beneficiaries gathered at the Kamehameha Schools Maui Campus for an opportunity to receive choose turnkey homesteads in the Hawaiian homestead communities of Kula, Waiohuli Hikina and the Waiehu Kou and three vacant residential lots in Waiohuli Hikina. In the end all but one vacant lot was selected.

“Prince Kuhio Kalaniana’ole’s vision of returning native Hawaiians to their ancestral lands was realized today for the 28 families who received residential homestead lots,” Hawaiian Homes Commission Chairman Alapaki Nahale-a said. “We anticipate that most of these families will be celebrating the holidays in their new homes next year.”

The second homestead awarded this morning went to Eric K. Cockett, who had been on the list since 1986.

The turnkey homes will be constructed by Armstrong Builders and they range in price from $201,650 for a two-bedroom, one-bath home to $377,100 for an eight-bedroom, three-bath home. The lot sizes range from 7,055 square feet to about one-acre.

Families pay $1 a year for a 99-year lease and they must also qualify for mortgage as part of the award process. About 50 applicants qualified to be invited to today’s lot selection. Beneficiaries received awards today have been on the wait list from as far back as 1985 to as recent as 1999.
