Representative Mele Carroll presents a proclamation from the State House at the Ho’olehua Homestead, Moloka’i Prince Kuhio Celebration, Mar. 29, 2014. The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands ‘ohana is deeply saddened to hear of her passing, today.

We are deeply saddened to share the news of State Representative Mele Carroll’s passing this morning.  The DHHL ‘ohana offers our aloha and condolences to Representative Carroll’s family, staff, colleagues and friends.  Representative Carroll did a fine job in representing her district, which included all Moloka’i and Lana’i homesteads and parts of Kahikinui on Maui.  She was also a strong advocate for the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and its beneficiaries and she consistently introduced legislation aimed at supporting the Department’s efforts to generate increased revenues for the trust.  In 2010, as chair of the House Committee on Hawaiian Affairs, Representative Carroll was instrumental in passing legislation that allowed the Department to extend the term of its general leases.
