Students Spark Conversation on Kauhale Project

Architecture students from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa presented their take on the traditional, multi-family Kauhale concept being developed by Hawaiian Home Lands.

Students took into account the traditional concept of an extended-family dwelling and spent the last week developing their own approach to the Kauhale design. Interesting features include adjustable walls that allow families to accommodate smaller or larger crowds, easily-navigable walkways throughout the house for keiki and kupuna alike, and even an in-house aquaponics system to help ‘ohana produce their own food.

The top three winning designs are being awarded at a ceremony later today.

The Kauhale challenge is part of a series of community planning and design discussions Hawaiian Homes staff hopes will help in further developing diverse homesteading options for Native Hawaiians like Kauhale.
